Pitanga Cultural Centre

Throughout the year, some thirty therapists and teachers offer physical education as a tool to broaden awareness and openness of the body. The centre consists of 7 rooms and halls, constructed intimately around a green courtyard. Participation is on contribution basis, based on what is needed to keep this non-profit service running.

History & Today’s organization

Pitanga is engaged in physical and cultural activities in the light of the yoga of Mother and Sri Aurobindo. Since 1991, its doors have been open for Aurovilians and friends to share their skilled knowledge in these fields. Its Brazilian founders named Pitanga after a sweetly flowering bush which is said to bring peace and harmony.

Vision & Missions

Pitanga is a Cultural Centre dedicated to serv­ing the development and enhancement of physical education and cultural activities for children and adult residents of Auroville in the light of Mother’s and Sri Aurobindo’s Yoga.

The most vibrant activities in this field are Yoga Āsanas and Aikido, a form of Martial Art. Yoga Āsanas are taught in different styles and offered to various levels of practitioners; a variety of treatments and therapies are offered that aim at cleaning, rebalancing, aligning the system and reestablishing health and well-being, an inte­gral approach towards a cultural perfection.
