Savitri Bhavan

History & Today’s organization:

The Auroville Savitri Study Circle started in 1994, under the Banyan tree in the Matrimandir ; 

As the need of a place dedicated to Savitri, the masterpiece of Sri Aurobindo, was increasingly felt, architect Helmut presented in November 24 the Master Plan and model for the Savitri Bhavan complex. A lot of fundraising effort was done in the course of the following years.

In 2001Savitri Bhavan received the custody of 472 Meditations on Savitri paintings (created by the Mother with Huta from 1961-66, along with an extensive collection of related materials.

On 2008 March 30 happened the dedication of Sri Aurobindo statue and the inauguration of the second module of the main building by Dr. Karan Singh, Chairman of Auroville Foundation.

Two years ago, a residence for researchers and students collaborating with Savitri Bhavan was inaugurated.

Vision & Missions:

Savitri Bhavan is a centre dedicated to fostering a living sense of Human Unity through spiritual education based on the vision and teachings of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother. The central focus is Sri Aurobindo’s mantric epic Savitri – a legend and a symbol, which the Mother has called ‘The supreme revelation of Sri Aurobindo’s vision’.

Leaders & Team: 

There is a team of 20 people around Shraddhavan to render the services offered by Savitri Bhavan (picture gallery, reading room, digital library, House of Mother’s and hostel to accommodate people; to organize  weekly classes, courses and musical events, guest lectures, film shows, as well as workshops, retreats and orientation sessions. 

Savitri Bhavan has been created to foster a living research that aids the growth of consciousness. Supporting all these activities a team of researchers are engaged in developing materials that will foster a deeper appreciation of the vision and work of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother and the aims and ideals of Auroville.
