Buddha Garden

Organic community farm

History and today’s organisation

Buddha Garden began in 2000 when Priya took over about an acre and a half of land that was to become the vegetable garden of Siddhartha Farm. At that time the red clay soil was very eroded and almost devoid of vegetation. Today, Buddha Garden grows a great variety of fruit and vegetables.  A number of educational programs on sustainable food growing are also organised.

Vision & Mission

The vision of Buddha Garden too grow food with love and awareness for the community of Auroville;  food that nourishes every part of our being, using methods that nurture the earth. The aim is to create a sustainable farm that is financially viable and in this process, provide a place to share an adventure. In an alive and vibrant environment, we have the opportunity to learn together about organic farming, about Auroville and about ourselves.

Opportunities at Buddha Garden

Daily tasks: All aspects of food growing : cleaning, composting, mulching, planting, weeding, harvesting. Once the volunteer has gained some experience in these activities, she/he might move on to more elaborate work like seed saving or nursery.
Daily tasks: Although more closely associated with the work in the kitchen garden, the volunteer will, like everyone else who lives in Buddha Garden, participate in the morning work sessions 6.15 – 9.00am every morning Monday to Friday. Work takes place in the kitchen garden at this time only if there are enough volunteers for the other farm work. For the kitchen garden there are two or three extra sessions either 10.00 – 12.30pm or 4.00 – 5.30pm according to need. Volunteers sign up for two extra sessions in addition to the morning work sessions.
